Cop Training can be an extensive task, however, if you’ve had the passion to be a cop for some time now and don’t really know where to start, it would be a good idea to start with a few basics. Firstly, understand that cop training is not easy and needs hard work and dedication, if you’re one who has always wanted to be a cop, then this career might be the right one for you, but if for whatever reason you are not mentally ready for such a job, then it’s best to not take it as a career as it can be quiet demanding.

Cop training requires you to go through extensive test which are mental, educational and physical therefore you would need certain training in all three aspects before you can go ahead to start off a career as a cop. Usually people are not aware of the kind of physical and mental training, thus, adequate research is a necessity to know all the procedures of the recruitment process.

There are various types of officers that you can chose to be, these include sheriff, urban officers, state officers and investigative detectives. Before you start any kind of training, you must realize your own strengths and see which role would suit you best. There are also certain age specifications for each role along with pre requisites of education and experience. Some of these roles require a college degree before you can apply. You will also need to go through extensive physical and mental tests along with some medical examinations to know how medically fit you are. Another reason for these mental examinations are to check whether you would be able to bare with the various stressful situations that you will experience while on the job.

The actual cop training will only start once you clear all these tests, when you’re eligible in all three aspects: mental, physical and educational, you can start your training as a cop which is typically a 12-14 week training period in which you would be enrolled in a police academy. The police academy provides extensive training on the state and constitutional laws along with proper training in how to investigate and other related on the job skills.

The training doesn’t really end here, there are a lot of Cop training programs that you may go through in order to enhance your skills as an officer. There are PTO (Police Training Officer) Programs that one can go through to experience post academy training in order to understand the complexities of the job today. There are also a huge number of courses that one can avail after the basic training to improve your skills, these can be short courses on assorted subjects for professional advancements. So once you’ve decided that you want to be a cop and clear your 12-14 weeks of professional cop training, you may want to opt for other professional courses to enhance your skills as a cop.
