The cops did not screw up. They kept the BMW in sight. A Crown Victoria would not have been able to do that. Sure the cop Camaro could have caught up and taken out the BMW, but it would have been a suicide mission at over 125mph. At those speeds the Camaro did exactly what it needed to do, keep the BMW in visual range until they could flank it.
